As a leading manufacturer of electrical and electronic components, Carling Technologies responds to customers needs with innovation, value, and world-class service for both standard products and custom applications.

Carling supplies products to widely diverse markets, yet its primary focus is on providing standard products and custom engineered solutions to several core industries, including transportation, electronics/telecommunications, appliances, commercial facilities controls, industrial controls and factory automation. The rapid growth and evolution of these industries has increased customers' demands for safe, reliable, cost-effective design solutions.

Quality by Design

What sets Carling Technologies apart from its competitors is the ability to offer our customers expertise in engineering, tooling, and manufacturing.

Members of the Carling Technologies Development Team work closely with a customer's engineering team to advance a project from initial product concepts to final design and manufacturing. In addition, customers receive the benefit of industry leading CAD/CAM software and state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment that includes the latest technology in molding, stamping, forming, welding, and testing equipment. The Carling Technologies Development Team can evaluate multiple design alternatives as well as develop products, tooling and manufacturing processes concurrently. The result is functionally superior, aesthetically pleasing products-produced faster and at a lower cost.

And because Carling Technologies can manufacture the majority of its product components, we are able to pass on to our customers the benefits of vertical integration, including total quality control.

These capabilities are available through sales engineers and sales offices worldwide. From our ISO 9001 certified headquarters in Connecticut, to our ISO 9002 certified manufacturing facilities in Texas, Mexico, and China, and technical sales offices throughout the world, Carling Technologies can tailor circuit protection, power distribution, and engineered switch solutions to meet or exceed a customer's requirements.

Custom Circuit Protection Solutions

The Carling Technologies Development Team has a proven record of designing successful solutions for customers with custom circuit protection needs. For example, a major theater lighting customer requested that a Carling Technologies' circuit breaker incorporate a neutral switch feature for the European market because Europe requires circuit breakers to break on both sides of the line. In response to this request, the Carling Technologies Development Team developed a switch/sub base module that can be attached to the back of the breaker.

In another case, Carling Technologies is supplying an assembly to a major telecommunications supplier that consists of a single pole circuit breaker with resistor and special terminals in a molded housing attached to the back of the breaker. As a cost-reduction initiative, the Carling Technologies Development Team designed a common housing that captures the circuit breaker mechanism, resistor and terminals in one complete package, reducing the number of parts and assembly operations, as well as resulting in increased product reliability.

Power Distribution Centers

Most engineers recognize the important role that a Power Distribution Center (PDC) plays in a product's electrical system. At Carling Technologies, our Engineering Team works with our customers up front, to ensure that our PDC design will complement and support the overall intent of the product design specifications.

In addition to providing PDC's of high-quality and cost effective design, on many occasions Carling Technologies has helped its customers reduce the size of their existing equipment and load centers without adversely affecting performance. As a result of this partnership in design, Carling Technologies' PDC business has flourished.

A Carling Technologies PDC offers a safe, reliable, cost-effective solution that is backed in large part by the company's extensive testing facility. And just as important is the wealth of experience we have gained by designing PDC's for the worlds largest telecommunications companies.

Engineered Switch Solutions

Carling Technologies offers a complete line of miniature, subminiature, and full-size sealed rocker switches, as well as toggle, pushbutton, and rotary switches. We offer multiple families of switches that can be modified by color, custom legends, lenses, and markings. Mounting brackets/panels, wire leads, harnesses, connectors, special designs, and other value-added features make installation easier and less costly.

The Carling Technologies Development Team will partner with customers to design custom solutions that integrate mechanical and electrical or electronic switch functions. Such switch solutions are becoming more and more complex as engineers work to improve functionality and minimize space to make products ergonomically compatible with user needs.

In one instance, an outdoor grill manufacturer needed a sealed ignition switch to provide protection from dust and moisture and to be able to operate in both hot and cold environments. Typically, this application uses a pushbutton ignition switch, but Carling Technologies sales engineers recommended the use of a rocker switch that would reduce the customer's manufacturing time and improve the quality of the product. In addition, the aesthetics of the final product were improved by imprinting a legend on the switch to indicate the function. Carling also added wire leads and quick-connect terminals to the switch, further reducing the customer's manufacturing time and easing the assembly of the switch to the grill.

For an industry leading manufacturer in the Class 7 heavy truck market, Carling Technologies developed a technologically industry-leading electronic switch using a Hall Effect sensor that offers 1 million plus cycles-the previous mechanical switch traditionally used only lasted 200,000 cycles.

In another instance, for a Class 8 truck manufacturer, Carling Technologies accelerated its L-Series program and designed an alternate terminal type, which cut the original insertion force in half. The customer's former vendor provided a product that required excessive insertion force when joining the switch to the connector on the wiring harness. This was causing assembly worker fatigue and delaying production. Carling's design solution not only solved this production issue, but also resulted in cost savings to the customer as well as providing a stronger seal.
